The scariest and most grateful night of my life was Christmas night.
This Christmas was the first Christmas we were on the road a ton now that we live in St Louis.
The road trip could not have gone better. The roads and traffic were great and so was the weather. The wonderful quality time and caring connection between the three of us was priceless, one of my favorite things about the trip.
Seeing family and all Christmas gatherings went great.
Christmas night Maxwell left our big Donahue Christmas in Hudson, WI to head to Madison, WI to celebrate Christmas with his dad’s family.
My parents, JC and I headed to my parents and nestled in to watch a Christmas movie.
After the movie, we noticed Maxwell had called multiple times.
He had hit black ice an hour and half into his trip.
A semi was behind him when his truck started to slide and went into the median. He thought he could drive the truck up and out of the median, but it was a no go. He braced himself while the truck flipped 2.5 times and landed on the passenger side.
The side and back windows were all broken, the truck was totalled. Maxwell was able to crawl out of the drivers side.
After his accident, there were four other cars that slid off the interstate as well. Sadly, I don’t think they faired as well as he did.
By divine intervention, Maxwell not only walked away from the accident, but the only injury he suffered were some scratches to his hand.
The tow truck guy dropped him off at a Kwik Trip where his dad and grandfather came to pick him up.
After talking to him, I went into my old bedroom at my parents and sat on the floor and just sobbed and sobbed. I then got on my knees and thanked Jesus over and over again for saving him.
JC and I pray for Maxwell almost every night and our main prayer is always his safety.
Prayer is so powerful!
The next day we stopped in Black River Falls at the tow truck garage to get as many things as we could out of the truck.
The tow truck dude said he had no idea how Maxwell walked away from this accident.
While in shock, we took the photos below and were able to retrieve everything except his glasses, something he really wanted us to find. Truly amazing that we were able to retrieve what we did.
We then headed to his dad’s in Madison. When we got there Maxwell was at a Doctor’s appointment getting checked out.
When he came in from his appointment he made his rounds to everyone in the room and came to me last.
As I hugged him I started to sob. Through my sobs I told him how we pray for his safety nightly and how I got on my knees to thank Jesus for protecting him. I told him how much we loved him and how we’re always here for him.
Once I gained control of my tears, I started to pull away, but Max pulled me back in as to say “you need to stay here a little longer”. So I cried and held my son a little longer.
As I type this I’m still in a state of shock and overwhelmed with emotion.
My hope for you, is that you incorporate prayer into your daily routine. Praying for other’s is the greatest gift you can ever give them and yourself.
Wishing you and your loved ones safety, love and peace.
Blessed and Grateful,
Ali
P.S. Here’s a great article on the Strength and Power of Prayer
